Under Construction was never designed to be a conventional DJ duo.
It grew out of something less formal: Chris Lake and FISHER liked playing records together, liked being around each other and discovered that the booth felt different when they shared it. The sets were loose. Their teams already overlapped. Friends and family were usually nearby. The reaction kept getting bigger, so they kept finding reasons to do it again.
That eventually became Under Construction, the B2B and event project built around Lake and FISHER.
It is not a band and has never needed to operate like a full-time recording act. It is a live idea first: two artists with major solo careers given enough time to move through their own records, unreleased music, edits, older house records and whatever else makes sense in the room.
Lake described the premise more simply in a 2023 Popdust interview: “At the root of this we’re just mates that love music.”
That is the useful place to start.
WHAT IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION?
Under Construction is the collaborative live project and event series from Chris Lake and Australian DJ and producer FISHER.
At an Under Construction show, they perform back-to-back rather than presenting two separate headline sets. There is no fixed rule that one artist plays one record and the other answers with the next. Lake has said they normally do not arrive with much of a plan. They trust each other, follow the direction of the set and let the room decide where it goes.
That matters because the project is built around an actual friendship rather than a pairing invented for a festival poster. Lake and FISHER share management and parts of the same wider team, which removes much of the friction that can make an occasional B2B feel forced.
In Mixmag Brasil, Lake put it this way: “Our friendship and musical connection can be felt when we perform together.”
THE BEGINNING: 2018, BUT NOT ONE SINGLE MOMENT
There is a temptation to give Under Construction one clean birthday. The documented history is messier and more interesting.
Lake's current AXS biography traces the seed of the series to his B2B with FISHER at EDC Las Vegas in 2018. The official EDC lineup from that year also billed Chris Lake B2B FISHER, alongside a separate Chris Lake B2B Chris Lorenzo appearance.
Lake has identified another 2018 set as pivotal. At Só Track Boa in Brazil, both artists played solo on the main stage and then moved to the Garden stage for an extended B2B that ran for hours. In his later Mixmag Brasil interview, he said their team saw what was happening between them and encouraged them to take the format seriously.
The point is not which set deserves to be called “the first.” The idea took shape across those shows. Under Construction did not arrive from a boardroom with a finished brand strategy. It developed from the parties themselves.
By 2019, the B2B had become recognizable as its own event concept.
2019: THE B2B BECOMES ITS OWN EVENT
Los Angeles was an early proof point, even before the Under Construction name was fully established.
In February 2019, Lake and FISHER played three consecutive sold-out nights at the Shrine Expo Hall. Contemporary coverage described the run as three sold-out B2Bs rather than two solo headliners sharing a bill.
That same year, the Under Construction name appeared around standalone dates in other major markets, including Brooklyn Mirage on August 3, 2019 and Mission Ballroom in Denver in October 2019.
The pattern that emerged still defines the project. Under Construction did not need to become a weekly touring act. The scarcity was part of the point. Each city could become its own version of the party.
DENVER, THEN A BIGGER EVENT FORMAT
Denver became one of the recurring Under Construction markets. After the 2019 Mission Ballroom show, Lake and FISHER returned in 2021 for an outdoor edition at Denver Coliseum.
The format expanded again in Arizona. On May 28 and 29, 2022, Under Construction took over Phoenix Raceway for a two-day event. Relentless Beats' event archive documents Lake B2B FISHER headlining both days, with Loco Dice, Hot Since 82, ANNA, Eli & Fur, Joshwa, Cloonee, Miane and Sosa across the supporting lineup.
By then, Under Construction was more than a set title. It could hold a wider bill around the central B2B and create a meeting point for artists from the worlds around Black Book Records, Catch & Release and the broader house and tech-house scene.
THE VISUAL WORLD BECOMES PART OF UNDER CONSTRUCTION
As the shows grew, the project developed a visual language of its own.
The 2023 Under Construction identity was built around a flexible wordmark, an Ojo symbol, off-black and off-white foundations, vintage-print color and a poster system influenced by 1960s psychedelic design. The system was developed with Colorola and deliberately felt different from either artist's solo branding.
That distinction matters. Under Construction works best when it feels like a place Lake and FISHER have created together, not simply “Chris Lake + FISHER” typed at the top of somebody else's event.
COACHELLA 2023
If the early Under Construction shows proved the B2B could sell on its own, Coachella 2023 showed how far the idea could travel.
Lake and FISHER closed the Outdoor Theatre on Sunday with an extended set that moved through both artists' catalogs, unreleased IDs, edits and records that had been circulating through their sets long before release.

The performance gave the partnership a global showcase. It also captured one of the things that makes a long B2B creatively useful: a record can be tested in front of tens of thousands of people before anyone decides what it is supposed to become.

HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD: OCTOBER 21, 2023
Six months later, Under Construction became a street party in the middle of Los Angeles.
On October 21, 2023, Goldenvoice and Framework brought Lake and FISHER to Hollywood Boulevard for one of the project's defining shows.
The scale was unusual even by festival standards. Lake's current AXS biography reports more than 12,000 fans for the takeover. The bill also included Cole Knight, Little Fritter and Chloé Robinson B2B DJ ADHD.
Chris Hemsworth delivered the custom intro before Lake and FISHER took over for roughly three hours. The official Apple Music recording documents the night in unusually specific detail: 52 tracks over 3 hours and 1 minute.
The set also became part of the story of Chemistry. Lake played an early, completely different version of “On & On” that night. Fans kept asking for the ID, but he later rebuilt the track rather than release the version everybody already knew.

DOES UNDER CONSTRUCTION RELEASE MUSIC?
Under Construction is primarily a live and event identity. Lake and FISHER have not turned it into a conventional artist alias with a separate discography.
They have, however, released music together under their individual names. The clearest example is “Somebody (2024)”, the rework of Gotye and Kimbra's “Somebody That I Used to Know” credited to Gotye, FISHER and Chris Lake, featuring Kimbra and Sante Sansone.
The version had already become a fan favorite after Lake and FISHER played it during their 2023 Coachella run. It was officially released on February 9, 2024.
The distinction is useful: it is a Chris Lake and FISHER collaboration connected to the world of their B2B, but it is not presented as a single by an artist called Under Construction.
THE ULTRA 2024 SET THAT NEVER HAPPENED
One detail is easy to get wrong when old festival posters are treated as proof that a performance happened.
Ultra Music Festival booked FISHER x Chris Lake present Under Construction for the Main Stage on Friday, March 22, 2024. Severe weather forced Ultra to suspend and then cancel the remainder of Friday night before they could perform.
The set was not rescheduled.
Lake later wrote that both artists had spent months preparing for it and had been excited to close Friday's main stage. It belongs in the Under Construction timeline as a major booking, but not as a completed performance.
WHAT DOES AN UNDER CONSTRUCTION SET SOUND LIKE?
There is no fixed track list, and that is the point.
A typical Under Construction set can move between Chris Lake records, FISHER records, unreleased music, edits, records from artists around both of their labels, rave references and house tracks that have nothing to do with either artist's catalog.
The Hollywood Boulevard recording is probably the clearest public document of the format. It starts with recognizable FISHER material, moves through Lake records and IDs and keeps changing shape across three hours.
Lake has said the two trust each other enough not to over-plan. One person makes a move, the other responds and the set develops from there.
That is why Under Construction is different from simply putting two headliners side by side. The point is not to divide the clock evenly. It is to make one long set.
WHY CHRIS LAKE AND FISHER WORK AS A B2B
The obvious answer is musical compatibility. The less glamorous answer may be more important: they actually like each other.
Lake has repeatedly described FISHER as one of his closest friends. They share parts of the same team. Their families and friends are often around the shows. The project is intentionally social behind the booth as well as in front of it.
That gives the B2B a looseness that is difficult to manufacture. FISHER can push a set one way, Lake can pull it somewhere else and neither one has to protect a rigid solo-show format.
The contrast helps too. Lake is known for obsessive production detail and long stretches of studio work. FISHER's public performance style is immediate, physical and deliberately unfiltered. Under Construction gives both instincts room without turning the night into a competition.
The gaps between appearances help for the same reason. Both artists leave, make their own records and build their own shows. When they come back together, there is new music and a different set to build.
UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT HEAD TRIP 2026
Head Trip 2026 is scheduled for October 10 and 11 at Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. On the festival's published Saturday lineup, Under Construction — FISHER + Chris Lake shares the day with Calvin Harris, Peggy Gou B2B Four Tet and Seth Troxler B2B Ben Sterling.
Head Trip's public support information says set times will be posted in the mobile app before the event, and that lineup and set times are subject to change. Those are the details worth checking close to showtime.

Lake and FISHER go back to their own careers, make new records, collect new IDs and eventually end up behind the same decks again.
Nothing about the set is supposed to feel finished.
